Facilitation of Interprofessional Medication Administration Enhances Learning Outcomes

by Wendeline Grbach, MSN, RN, CLNC, CHSE

Since the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2013 was implemented, mandating use of EHR’s and CPOE, healthcare institutions have utilized various products to support clinical assessment and documentation. Education to those products in the institutional setting typically occurs during an employee new-hire orientation after their formal academic program completion. Data drives all aspects of safe and accurate healthcare delivery; however, graduates have a formidable learning curve once achieving employment to the organization’s specific culture and operations. Learning the process/use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR’s), places an additional training burden on some facilities. Healthcare academia of all disciplines strives to provide experience in high-level, realistic care environments so that their graduates can achieve entry to practice readily. In so doing, incorporation of informatics training is part of most program curricula. Simulation lab events featuring a comprehensive patient situation inclusive of EMR’s is replacing clinical hour requirements in many domains due to lack of experiential site availability, faculty to support those off-site experiences, and limitations to student engagement by the organizations for patient safety sake. Thus, barriers in informatics education need to be surmounted to develop safe and efficient entry level practitioners.

KbPort™ is at the forefront of assisting healthcare students to achieving realistic practice replication in a simulated setting. Medication administration is a risky and data-driven process involving two key disciplines, Nursing and Pharmacy, to assure patients receive the correct medication accurately and timely. Practice of the process requires intimate knowledge of clinical assessment, pharmacodynamics, and key physiologic data in order to support learning the psychomotor skill. Typically these student learners are educated in silos of their programs, and have little opportunity to collaborate in the care environment until they are employed.

KbPort’s Simplicity™ solutions include Medication Dispensation products that replicate the actual practice and workflow of Nursing and Pharmacy students. Pharmacy Tech students gain relevant and practical experience into an array of skills they will need to be successful in the institution or community pharmacy setting by engaging in simulations using SimCabRx™, the automated dispensation cabinet(ADC). CPOE validation, reconciliation, inventory, stock, and a number of other critical tasks can be practiced through the use of technology readily available in the real clinical setting.

Nursing students as well can engage with the Nursing version of SimCabRx™, which has additional restrictive simulated medications students can administer to their patient as part of a learning experience. Nursing students also may utilize SimCartRx™, the mobile Medication Dispensation cart at the bedside of their assigned patient. Working in tandem with SimCabRx™ the student can, through review of their patient clinical profile and provider orders, select a prescribed medication from the cabinet, validate accuracy, and transfer that medication from the cabinet to the cart for individualized patient administration at the point of care. Integrating all the functionality is SimEMR®, the simulated electronic medical record which permits either student discipline to review patient data, validation and reconciliation of medications ordered, barcode scanning for patient safety, finalizing with the inclusion of documentation which completes the practice event.

Increasing research and focus on patient safety has led to the attempt at interprofessional education of Nursing and Pharmacy program student. Through role identification, collaborative communication, clinical assessment and data integration and interprofessional respect for each discipline’s knowledge and ability, patient and provider outcomes are enhanced. Using KbPort™ Simplicity™ turnkey solutions and its components, acclimation to the professional workforce will become a positive outcome for healthcare student graduates, and the organizations they will serve in their future careers.
