Laerdal was established 1940 in Norway. They got their start by
specializing in greeting cards and children's literature. As the company expanded and with the invention of soft
plastics in the 1950's, it began producing "furniture friendly" toy cars and realistic dolls for young girls.
¶ This experience was then applied to
first aid and emergency medicine training, emphasizing on realism. Asmund Laerdal realized that if mannequins were more
life like, students would be more motivated to learn lifesaving procedures. Since then, Laerdal has focused on
developing new technologies and improving existing products to serve in the saving of lives. Visit their website for a more information on their
product line.
The Surgical
Education Group (SEG), at Imperial College of London,
is led by Dr Roger Kneebone, Clinical Senior
Lecturer in Surgical Education. Current work centres on the contextualisation of clinical learning (especially in
relation to surgical and procedural skills), and innovative approaches to role-based multiprofessional training.
These include high and low-fidelity simulations, team-based learning and the use of virtual reality and other emerging
technologies within clinical education.
The MEd in Surgical Education, at Imperial
College of London, offers a sound theoretical background to the principles
of surgical education, a rigorous academic training, an introduction to appropriate research methods and practice,
and the opportunity for intellectual growth and development within a challenging, stimulating yet supportive
environment. ¶ The programme develops new areas of teaching to reflect contemporary research and scholarship, and ensures that
the themes of surgery and education are always linked. It aims to attract highly motivated UK and overseas students
who are seeking a good basis from which to assume more responsibility and take on a leadership role in this
rapidly growing field (in deaneries, surgical colleges , universities or hospitals), and those who intend to
go on and study for a PhD.
